Will holding my urine damage my kidneys?
Whether holding in urine damages the kidneys is one of the most frequently asked questions in urology. People who go long periods without using the restroom—especially those with demanding work schedules or while traveling—often wonder whether this poses a health risk.
Holding your urine from time to time does not directly harm your kidneys. However, what matters here is the frequency and duration. Holding urine for too long can cause the bladder to stretch excessively and, over time, lead to impaired bladder function. It can also increase the risk of urinary tract infections. Urinating an average of 5–7 times a day is considered normal.
