Stem Cell Therapy
What Is Erectile Dysfunction and What Causes It?
Before moving on to stem cell therapy, I’d like to briefly touch on the topics of “What is erectile dysfunction?” and “What are the causes of erectile dysfunction?”
Erectile dysfunction—defined as the inability of the penis to achieve the firmness necessary for sexual intercourse or to maintain that firmness throughout intercourse—can result from both physiological and psychological causes. Many physical conditions—such as diabetes, penile curvature, hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart and vascular diseases—can cause erectile dysfunction by affecting blood flow to the penis. You can find more detailed information on this topic in my article titled “Erectile Dysfunction and Its Treatment.”
Although not as common as premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction is quite prevalent, and its prevalence increases with age. This condition can negatively affect the quality of life for both men and their sexual partners. This health issue, which creates emotional tension between couples and undermines self-confidence, thereby affecting both sexual life and daily life, can be treated with methods that do not require surgical intervention.
Among these methods, treatment for erectile dysfunction using SVF stem cells is considered the most up-to-date and effective. Most of us have varying levels of knowledge about stem cell therapy, so I’d like to start by answering the question, “What is stem cell therapy?”
What Is SVF Stem Cell Therapy?
Stem cells are the body’s fundamental building blocks; they form the structure of all tissues and organs. In addition to being a distinct cell type in their own right, they have the ability to differentiate into different cell types.
Stem cells have the ability to develop into cells found in the blood, brain, bones, and all other organs. These cells have the potential to repair, restore, regenerate, and replace damaged tissues.
They can replace damaged cells in the area where they are applied, repair and regenerate tissues, and have thus become the preferred method for treating many diseases. Indeed, since the 1990s, stem cell therapy has been used in many fields of medicine.
SVF stem cell therapy, known as the Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF), is an innovative treatment method based on the principle of obtaining adult-type stem cells by harvesting a person’s adipose tissue and centrifuging it, and then injecting the resulting stem cells into areas where damaged tissue is present.
How Is Erectile Dysfunction Treated with SVF Stem Cells?
This treatment is performed using the patient’s own fat tissue. Approximately 50–100 cc of fat tissue is harvested from the patient’s abdomen or surrounding areas.
Fat tissue harvested under local anesthesia is processed using a special kit to obtain a fluid rich in growth factors and containing mesenchymal stem cells. This fluid is called SVF, or Stromal Vascular Fraction.
This fluid, derived from adipose tissue, is injected into the tubular structure of the penis. This natural method facilitates the repair and regeneration of damaged areas within the penis. Additionally, by triggering new blood vessel formation and promoting tissue regeneration, erectile dysfunction shows significant improvement over a period of approximately 6 months following treatment. However, in some patients, this process may take as long as 9–12 months.
The treatment procedure is quite comfortable and is completed in a short amount of time. While the extraction of adipose tissue takes about 30 minutes, the preparation of the SVF fluid rich in stem cells is completed in about 10 minutes. The fact that the treatment consists of a single session enhances the comfort of the process.
Stem Cells and SVF in Erectile Dysfunction
A personalized approach is necessary for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. There are various treatment options available in this regard. SVF stem cell therapy is a highly promising and significant alternative.
Unlike other treatment methods, stem cell therapy has been shown to produce statistically significant positive results not only in patients diagnosed with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, but even in those with severe erectile dysfunction.
In the past, penile implant surgery was considered the only option for treating patients with severe erectile dysfunction caused by conditions such as smoking, hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol. However, the success rate of SVF stem cell therapy has led us to reevaluate this approach.
Scientific research also supports this view. Now, let’s examine what scientific studies say about the results of stem cell therapy…
Results of Stem Cell Therapy
A study conducted on 21 men who experienced erectile dysfunction following radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer and who underwent stem cell therapy because they did not respond to medication yielded the following results:
It was shown that the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) scores for all patients increased from 6 to 12 after 6 months and from 7 to 14 after 12 months.
If these values fall within the range of 5–7 on the IIEF scale, they indicate severe erectile dysfunction. Values in the range of 12–16, on the other hand, indicate mild to moderate erectile dysfunction. In this case, all 21 patients with severe erectile dysfunction who underwent stem cell therapy began to experience mild to moderate erectile dysfunction following treatment.
Another study conducted in 2012 demonstrated that SVF stem cell therapy promoted cavernous endothelial regeneration in a patient with erectile dysfunction caused by diabetes who did not respond to medication.
The Future of Erectile Dysfunction Treatment with SVF Stem Cells
The scientific data obtained are quite promising. Although it cannot be said that the treatment will be 100% effective, it is reported that positive results can be achieved for erectile dysfunction and even Peyronie’s disease through stem cell therapy.
SVF stem cell therapy is more effective when performed by specialist surgeons, underscoring the importance of careful patient selection.
Conclusion
The progression of erectile dysfunction and the failure of other treatments to provide adequate relief could lead patients to require surgical intervention. However, we have a non-surgical treatment option for severe erectile dysfunction that yields largely positive results. This treatment not only resolves erectile dysfunction but also eliminates the underlying cause of the problem. So, there’s no need to despair! With lifestyle changes and SVF stem cell therapy, your sex life can be revitalized.
