What Causes a Burning Sensation When Urinating?
A burning sensation when urinating is commonly referred to as dysuria and can be caused by many different factors. The most common causes are as follows:
- Infections
- Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): This is one of the most common causes. It may be accompanied by symptoms such as frequent urination, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, and groin pain.
- Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate in men can also cause a burning sensation when urinating.
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Infections such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and herpes can cause dysuria.
- Stones and Blockages
- Kidney or bladder stones: These can cause irritation and a burning sensation in the urinary tract.
- Urethral strictures: These can develop especially following infections or trauma.
- Inflammatory and Irritant Causes
- Chemical irritation: Soaps, shower gels, spermicides, or scented pads can irritate the urinary tract.
- Interstitial cystitis: A chronic inflammation of the bladder that may present with a burning sensation during urination and frequent urination.
- Other Reasons
- Diabetes: High blood sugar can increase the risk of urinary tract infections.
- Hormone deficiencies: A decrease in estrogen after menopause can cause dryness and a burning sensation in the urinary tract.
What Should You Do?
If the burning sensation lasts longer than a few days, or if you have additional symptoms such as a fever, bloody urine, or severe pain, you should see a urologist. Tests such as a urinalysis, urine culture, and, if necessary, an ultrasound may be performed to make a diagnosis.
