Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)
What Is Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction, commonly known as impotence, is the inability to initiate or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. In about 70% of men with erectile dysfunction, the underlying cause is vascular disease, also known as atherosclerosis. The most common vascular diseases include coronary artery disease and diabetes, but any condition affecting the blood vessels can also cause erectile dysfunction. Atherosclerosis, which affects the coronary arteries of the heart, also impacts blood vessels throughout the body, including those in the penis.
Another very common disease affecting blood vessels is diabetes. Diabetes affects all small capillaries in the body, including those in the penis. For this reason, erectile dysfunction is almost always seen in diabetic patients, either in the early or late stages.
Other major factors that trigger and worsen atherosclerosis include smoking, high cholesterol, and elevated lipid levels in the blood.
Additionally, erectile dysfunction frequently occurs as a side effect of many medications used to treat various conditions.
Contrary to popular belief, erectile dysfunction is a very common complaint. It is seen intermittently or continuously in 2 out of every 3 men over the age of 40.
Modus ED Shock Wave Therapy (SWT) promotes the formation of new vessels in the penile capillaries. This increases blood flow to the penis, resulting in stronger and more sustained erections.
What Is the Mechanism of Action of Shock Wave Therapy?
Low-intensity shock wave therapy (LiSWT) has been successfully used in cardiology since the early 2000s to restore blood flow in heart tissue with poor circulation. It works by increasing blood supply to underperfused areas of the heart.
In a similar way, shock waves—generated and then focused after reflection—stimulate the formation of new microvessels in the penis, thereby enhancing penile blood flow. This improved circulation allows for successful erections to be restored.
Since achieving a proper erection depends on adequate blood supply to the penis, LiSWT directly addresses one of the primary underlying causes of erectile dysfunction.
How Is Shock Wave Therapy Performed?
The treatment is usually applied in 6 sessions.
During the procedure, low-intensity ultrasonic sound waves are delivered to the penis and the base of the penis.
Why Is Shock Wave Therapy Performed in Multiple Sessions?
The reason shock wave therapy is performed in sessions is related to its mechanism of action. The effect of low-intensity acoustic shock waves promotes stem cell recruitment, leading to the formation of new blood vessels. This is a gradual process that requires time, as it relies on the body’s own natural healing mechanism.
For this reason, Modus ED Shock Wave Therapy is carried out in a series of 6 sessions.
How Successful Is Shock Wave Therapy?
Shock wave therapy is effective in all cases of erectile dysfunction caused by vascular problems. Vascular-related erectile dysfunction accounts for about 70% of all patients, with the largest groups being diabetic patients and those with coronary artery disease. In addition, Modus ED-SWT therapy has shown successful results both before and after prostate surgery.
In mild to moderate cases, success rates are over 80% with 6–12 sessions of Modus ED-SWT.
In severe cases, success rates are over 60% with 12–24 sessions.
In other words:
Among mild to moderate patients, 3 out of 4 achieve successful outcomes after 6–12 sessions.
Among severe patients, 2 out of 4 achieve successful outcomes after 12–24 sessions.
Since Modus ED-SWT has no side effects, there is no strict limitation on the number of sessions. Every additional set of 6 sessions further increases the overall success rate.
For comparison, oral medications have a success rate of around 60–70%. However, due to side effects, cardiovascular risks in patients with coronary artery disease, the need to plan sexual activity in advance, and drug dependency, about 50% of patients eventually stop using medications.
Moreover, it has been shown that severe patients who did not respond to medications and were referred for injections or penile prosthesis may regain responsiveness to oral medications after Modus ED-SWT therapy.
Is Shock Wave Therapy Safe? Are There Any Side Effects?
Modus ED-SWT therapy is completely safe. It does not involve any surgical intervention or invasive procedure, and no medication is required. To date, no side effects have been reported either during or after the treatment.
After each session, patients can immediately return to their daily activities without any restrictions.
Is the Treatment Session Painful? Is Sedation, Anesthesia, or Any Preparation Required Beforehand? What Is Felt During the Procedure?
No sedation, anesthesia, or special preparation is required before treatment. There are no restrictions needed after the procedure either. Some patients report feeling a mild tingling sensation during the session, which usually disappears by the end of the treatment.
How Long Does a Treatment Session Last?
Each treatment session lasts approximately 20 minutes. Modus ED-SWT therapy is not a one-time treatment; it requires at least 6 sessions.
For mild to moderate cases, 6–12 sessions are usually needed for successful treatment.
For severe cases, 12–24 sessions may be required to achieve successful results.
When Is the Success of the Treatment First Felt?
The effect of the treatment is usually noticed about 1 month after completing the final Modus ED-SWT session.
Will the Treatment Need to Be Repeated in the Future?
Since Modus ED-SWT therapy has no side effects, there is no limitation on the number of sessions. Every additional set of 6 sessions further increases the success rate. Repeating a 6-session treatment series in the future can enhance and prolong the effectiveness of the therapy.
Does It Affect Penis Size?
With Modus ED-SWT therapy, an increase in penile girth of 5 mm or more is frequently observed in patients. This effect is due to the formation of new blood vessels.
What Are the Advantages and Success Rates of Shock Wave Therapy?
No use of drugs, prostheses, or similar methods — this treatment is completely non-invasive.
Unlike other therapies, it does not need to be used before every sexual intercourse.
Unlike medication, which only temporarily dilates the blood vessels, this therapy permanently restores blood flow by removing blockages in the vessels and stimulating new vessel formation.
Modus ED-SWT therapy has been observed to increase penile girth by promoting the formation of new blood vessels.
After the procedure, patients can immediately return to their daily lives.
No anesthesia, sedatives, or medication are required during or after the procedure.
The success rate of ED-SWT therapy is over 80%. In severe patients who do not respond even to medication, the success rate exceeds 60%.
After ED-SWT therapy, many patients no longer require the medications they previously depended on.
It has no reported side effects.
